The two Dhaka city corporations have decided to set up 16 makeshift cattle markets in the capital for the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) will set up 10 cattle markets – last year, there were 11 markets in the area – while the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) will set up six markets – last year, there were seven. Moreover, the permanent cattle market in Gabtoli will also be set up.

DNCC has shifted the location of five markets for Eid-ul-Azha from the capital’s busy areas and grounds of hospitals and schools. Meanwhile, DSCC has yet to change any of its market locations.

City corporation officials said they have already called for tenders for the lease of cattle markets.

They added that, due to repeated media reports over public hassles in the last few years, makeshift cattle markets will not be allowed within and around free spots next to areas with educational institutions and hospitals.

DNCC officials said cattle markets in north Dhaka will not be set up in areas adjoining the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Hospital and other institutions in Agargaon and around Uttara Azampur Government Primary School and its adjoining areas.

The DNCC will set up cattle markets at the open spaces of Khilkhet-Banorupa Residential Project area, Eastern Housing at Mirpur-6, the open area near the bridge at Uttara-15 and 16, the Kuril-Purbachal 300-feet wide link road, Baunia Canal embankment, the area adjacent to the open space at Mirpur-11 and at Rayerbazar graveyard.

DNCC Chief Executive Officer BM Enamul Haque told the Dhaka Tribune they have shifted the cattle markets in consideration of public interest and to avoid public distress.

The DSCC cattle markets include the Jigatala-Hazaribagh ground, Rahmatganj playground at Lalbagh, Meradia playground, Sadek Hossain Khoka playground, the Maitree Shangho playground adjacent to North Shahjahanpur rail gate, the Dhupkhola East and Club playground, Balur Math adjacent to Brothers Union playground at Gopibagh, the open space adjacent to Postogola Shoshanghat, Hazi Delwar Hossain playground at Lalbag and the open space of Islam Chairman house near the embankment of the Buriganga river’s second channel.

DSCC Chief Executive Md Ansar Ali Khan said they have not shifted any cattle markets this year because there has been no objection to any of the makeshift markets of the DSCC.
