  • Burdwan blast: NIA team arrives in Dhaka

    A four-member delegation of India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrived in Dhaka as part of its investigation into the Burdwan blast of Oct 2.

    The team arrived in Dhaka around 10:35am Monday to share relevant information with their Bangladeshi counterparts. The Indian investigators might also interrogate some people here.

  • Hartal peacefully observed in Sylhet

    The dawn-to-dusk hartal enforced by “Amra Sylhetbasi” was observed peacefully in Sylhet.

    The hartal began at 6am and continued till 6am on Monday.

    The organisation observed the hartal protesting the inclusion of Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury in the Shah AMS Kibria murder case.

    However, no long-route buses left the district town.

    Additional police members were deployed in the district to avoid further untoward situation.

  • 1 held with gold bars at Chittagong airport

    The estimated worth of the gold bars is Tk50 lakhCustoms officials have detained a person with 10 gold bars at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong.

    The detainee is Md Faruk, 29, said Shahadat Jamil, assistant commissioner of Chittagong customs.

    Jamil said: “The customs officials recovered the gold bars weighing 1.16kg while scanning his luggage on Monday morning,” he said.

    Faruk arrived at the airport by a flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines from Dubai around 6:25am, the official said.

    The estimated worth of the gold bars is Tk50 lakh.

  • 2 killed in Gopalganj road accident

    Two people have been killed as a bus rammed into a house at Shalbarat under Kashiani upazila in Gopalganj.

    The deceased are Rashida Begum, 55, wife of Monaf Munshi of Shalbarat village and their granddaughter Laila Khanom, 6.

    Kashiyani police station Officer-in-Charge Monirul Islam said: “A sand-laden truck rammed into the roadside house as its driver lost control over its steering in the area, killing the two on the spot.”

    He said two cattle were also killed in the accident.

    Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Rezaul Karim passed the order on Monday.

    The court asked Tarique Rahman to appear before it on December 10.

    Md Monir Khan, assistant secretary of Bangladesh Awami League central committee, filed the case with the court.

  • War crimes: Charge sheet against Forkan submitted

    The court fixed November 30 for cognisance hearingThe formal charge sheet has been submitted against Forkan Mallik for committing crimes against humanity in Patuakhali during the 1971 Liberation War.

    Prosecutor Mokhlesur Rahman Badal submitted the charge sheet to the International Crimes Tribunal on Monday morning.

    The court fixed November 30 for cognisance hearing.

    Eight charges have been pressed against Forkan including murder, rape and genocide.

    Police, in a drive, detain eight people in this connection, says Naogaon SP Kaiyumuzzaman KhanA local Swechchhasebak League leader and his younger brother have been chopped to death by unidentified miscreants in Durgapur area of Natore Sadar upazila.

    The deceased were identified as Ohidur Rahman, 35, vice-president of Natore Sadar upazila unit of Swechchhasebak League and his brother Shahin Rahman, 30, sons of late Mujibar Rahman of Chakprachi village.

    Naogaon Sadar police station Inspector Sumit Sutradhar said: “Ohidur and Shahin were returning home at Chakprachi village from the town around 11:30pm on Sunday.”
