Apple prioritizes optimization, while Google races to introduce new features first. Many Android manufacturers, including Pixel, are incorporating various artificial intelligence (AI) features to attract customers. Google's own AI, Gemini, is now available as a standalone app on the Play Store.
Let's explore some of the AI features already available on Android.
Gemini on Android
Previously known as Bird, Gemini is Google’s take on AI. Gemini on Android is now working like an intelligence chatbot to draft emails, schedule meetings and search for information from the internet. Gemini is seen as a competitor to ChatGPT and a possible replacement for Google Assistant.
Magic editor and best take
The magic editor is an AI-powered feature on pixel devices to edit specific parts of a photo. The editor can change the background, sky and subjects to users’ choice. The editor can also add a generative fill or scale the subject to the user’s liking. Best Take is another Google Photos feature to automatically select the best photo from multiple group photos.
It is an easy way to find the perfect one when a person in a group photo has their eyes closed or looking in another way.
Generative wallpaper
The latest Android 14 brought a feature to generate a wallpaper by using a prompt. AI can further edit the generated wallpaper with the “inspire me” feature. Though this generative platform is limited only to the wallpaper use case, the extensiveness of the feature showed what Google is capable of doing about generative images on a large scale.
Besides equipping its applications with AI, Google is also allowing other developers to use AI by adding features to Android Studio.
Now developers can add on-device AI features with Gemini Nano.
