Two Bangladeshi nationals were seriously injured in firing by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at the Basantpur border in Kaliganj upazila of Satkhira late Tuesday night.

The injured are Mohi Uddin, 42, son of Golam Rabbani of Shitalpur village, and Shahin, 28, son of the late Khajer Ali Sardar of the same village.

According to local residents and family sources, the two were crossing into Bangladesh from India through Basantpur ghat in Kaliganj by swimming across the Kalindi river around 2am when a BSF patrol team opened fire on them. Both were hit by bullets and sustained serious injuries.

Locals later rescued them around 3:15am and took them to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex. As their condition deteriorated, they were shifted to Satkhira Sadar Hospital for advanced treatment.

Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jewel Hossain said it was initially learned that the two had entered India illegally and were shot while returning to Bangladesh.

“Police visited the scene after receiving the information. As their condition was critical, they were sent to Satkhira Sadar Hospital,” he said.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officials could not be reached for comment.
