Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman left Dhaka on Sunday morning for a three-day official visit to Russia, according to a foreign ministry press release.
Prime Minister's Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir is accompanying him on the trip.
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Khalilur Rahman will meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on June 8 to discuss bilateral and international issues.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said the visit, scheduled from June 7 to 9, was made at Lavrov's invitation. It added that this is Khalilur Rahman's first visit to Russia in his current capacity.
The two sides are expected to discuss the status and prospects of Russia-Bangladesh cooperation, along with current regional and global developments.
The visit will also include a meeting with the leadership of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.
Bangladesh and Russia maintain longstanding relations in trade, energy, education and multilateral affairs. The two countries also have consultation mechanisms on political issues and counterterrorism.
Bilateral trade has remained above $2 billion in recent years. Russia's main exports include industrial equipment, mineral fertilizers and wheat, while Bangladesh mainly exports ready-made garments and seafood.
The Intergovernmental Russian-Bangladesh Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation is the main mechanism for coordinating business ties between the two countries.
The partnership also includes cooperation on the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. One unit has already been commissioned, while the second is expected to be launched this year.
Russia also remains active in Bangladesh's energy sector. Between 2012 and 2023, Gazprom International Limited drilled and completed projects for about 20 wells in Bangladeshi gas fields.
Cooperation in education is also set to expand. For the 2025-26 academic year, 185 scholarships have been allocated to Bangladeshi citizens to study in Russia.
Khalilur Rahman is scheduled to return to Dhaka on June 9 after concluding the visit.
