Consignment of 231,840 eggs arrive at Benapole

The tariff on eggs is now 5%, down from 25%, which importers say will help lower the price of eggs in the local market

A new consignment of eggs, consisting of 231,840 eggs, imported from India under a reduced 5% tariff arrived at Benapole port in Jessore on Tuesday night.

Notably, the tariff on eggs is now 5%, down from the previous 25%, which importers say will help lower the price of eggs in the local market.

The importing company, Hydroland Solution, was expected to complete customs clearance on Wednesday.

Previously, each egg was taxed at Tk1.96, but with the tariff reduction, the tax per egg is now only Tk0.76. This allows for the new consignment to be sold at a market price of around Tk9 per egg.

According to customs sources, from September 8 to October 29, five consignments totalling 1,159,200 eggs were imported through Benapole port.

In an effort to increase egg supply and reduce market prices, the National Board of Revenue issued an order to reduce the tariff on October 17. Benapole Customs House received the order on October 20, and the first consignment of 231,840 eggs was cleared at the reduced rate of Tk0.76 per egg the next day.

Ikramul Hasan Sajib of Hydroland Solution, the importer of the latest consignment, said: "We are getting clearance for eggs at the newly set tariff… prices will now be lower than before."

Benapole Customs House Deputy Commissioner Othello Chowdhury said customs was providing full support to the importers in clearing these shipments.
