The government plans to align university admission schedules with Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations from 2027, in a move aimed at reducing academic delays and shortening the gap between higher secondary and university education.
Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon announced the initiative on Friday, saying students would no longer have to lose months waiting for admission processes after completing their HSC examinations.
“University admission processes will be synchronized with the HSC schedule from 2027 so that students do not lose valuable time,” he said while addressing the orientation program of Jahangirnagar University’s 2025-26 academic session.
The move comes as concerns persist over session backlogs and lengthy admission procedures that often delay students’ entry into higher education and, ultimately, the job market.
The minister said education reform must focus not only on academic qualifications but also on producing a skilled workforce capable of contributing to national development.
“Education cannot remain limited to obtaining degrees. It must be linked to skills, productivity and employability,” he said.
Highlighting Bangladesh’s demographic advantage, Milon said the country’s growing population could become a major national asset if transformed into skilled human resources.
“If we can convert this large population into a skilled workforce, it will become one of Bangladesh’s greatest strengths,” he said.
The announcement follows the government’s broader effort to streamline the academic calendar.
Earlier, authorities unveiled examination schedules for SSC and HSC several years in advance as part of efforts to reduce session jams across the education system.
Around 2,000 newly admitted students attended the Jahangirnagar University program, where university authorities also emphasized academic excellence, intellectual freedom and personal development.
