One arrested over machete-point robbery of two women in Mohammadpur

The incident took place on Sunday in front of the victims’ residence and drew widespread attention after video footage of the robbery went viral on social media

Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a man named in connection with a machete-point robbery involving two women in the Noorjahan Road area under Mohammadpur Police Station in Dhaka following the Eid holidays.

The arrestee was identified as Jewel.

A Rapid Action Battalion-2 official confirmed the arrest on Tuesday afternoon, saying the suspect was detained in Narayanganj based on intelligence following the circulation of CCTV footage on social media and news outlets.

According to RAB, the victims—two sisters who had returned to their Dhaka home from Thakurgaon after the Eid-ul-Azha holidays—were robbed at knifepoint shortly after getting off a rickshaw in front of their residence. The attackers fled with mobile phones, gold ornaments, cash and luggage.

The footage shows the two women standing outside their home after getting off a rickshaw when a man wearing a lungi, black T-shirt and cap arrives wielding a machete. He is seen alongside an accomplice. The attackers threaten the rickshaw puller, push him aside and snatch bags, luggage and valuables from the women before fleeing the scene.

A case was filed at Mohammadpur Police Station by a woman named Tuniat Jina Mahjabin, officials said, adding that efforts are underway to recover the stolen items.
