A Dhaka court on Wednesday granted three-day remand to two people arrested in a snatching case involving two women on Nurjahan Road in Mohammadpur.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jamsed Alam passed the order after hearing a seven-day remand petition filed by investigation officer Rana Roy.
The accused are Juel, also known as Source Arif, and Anwar Hossain. Dhaka Metropolitan Police prosecution branch Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman confirmed the matter.
In the remand petition, Rana Roy said the two women had returned to Dhaka from their village homes after the Eid-ul-Azha holidays when they were held at machete point in front of their residence and robbed of a suitcase, mobile phones, cash and gold ornaments.
The petition also said several others were involved in the incident and that the stolen items had not been recovered, making remand necessary for interrogation.
During the hearing, the magistrate verified the identities of the accused, criticized their activities and expressed concern over the rise in snatching incidents in Mohammadpur.
The investigation officer told the court that the stolen suitcase had not been recovered. In response to a court query, the accused said the suitcase was with their associate Alam.
Defense lawyer Morshed Hossain sought cancellation of the remand, saying Arif worked as a police source. After hearing both sides, the court granted three-day remand.
According to the case details, the incident took place around 3am on Saturday in front of a house on Noorjahan Road in Mohammadpur.
CCTV footage circulated on social media showed two men armed with machetes threatening the women after they got off a rickshaw and snatching a suitcase, bags and other valuables.
