Two people including a union parishad (UP) chairman were killed in a road accident at Salutikar Mitrimahal on the Sylhet-Companiganj highway around 1am on Sunday.
The deceased are Md Obaidullah Ishaq, 30, chairman of Jalalabad union of Sylhet Sadar upazila and member of the executive committee of Sylhet district Jubo League, and his friend M Hafizur Rashid, 28, a businessman of Sylhet Stadium Market and a resident of Mir Maidan.
Gowainghat police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) KM Nazrul Islam confirmed that the accident took place when a motorcycle bound for Sylhet, carrying the duo, collided with a stationary truck at Salutikar Mitrimahal on the Sylhet-Companiganj National Highway in Gowainghat upazila of Sylhet district. Both individuals died on the spot.
Upon receiving news of the accident, a police team led by the OC of Gowainghat police station arrived at the scene. They recovered the bodies of the two motorcycle riders and sent them to Sylhet Osmani Hospital. Currently, the bodies are in the hospital morgue as the legal procedures are underway.
Following the incident, a sense of mourning has enveloped the political and social landscape of Sylhet. As an emerging public representative in the local political and social arena, Md Obaidullah Ishaq and the young businessman have garnered deep condolences and grief expressed through social media.
Md Obaidullah Ishaq, who was elected chairman of Jalalabad union of Sylhet Sadar upazila as a nominated candidate of the Bangladesh Awami League with the boat symbol in the last UP election, managed to quickly win the affection of people from all walks of life.
He achieved this by standing alongside the community during times of joy and sorrow and by actively engaging in various developmental activities within the area.
His late father, Atiqur Rahman, had also served as chairman of the same union, earning a reputation over the years.
