The disgruntled worker

Update : 29 Jun 2015, 01:15 PM

I am a 27-year-old man working for a leading bank in the city. My manager seems to be biased and more favouring towards my colleague who's been here for longer. How do I talk to my department head about this issue without feeling like I'm overstepping my boundaries?

This is such a common phenomenon- others do not realise how good we are. Mostly it is true; I would suggest you take a little longer before you take any steps. What to do:

Stop comparing yourself with your colleague– it will only makes you miserable.

Compare yourself with YOURSELF- how much you are learning and how professional you have become.

Work well and with joy- remember whatever you do with joy, that joy, that sense of well-being belongs to you. A work well done is a well done work, whether you are praised for it or not.

Learn to praise yourself, tell yourself that you enjoy your work; remind yourself that you are doing your best with joy and you are happy with yourself.

Be cheerful at work, try to enjoy every aspect of it.

Soon with the right attitude and energy you will be discovered. If in six months time you are still not happy with the situation, talk to your manager and ask him if he thinks you are ready for a promotion. If not and you have been there long enough, look for another job.
